Barracco wrote in the appendix to his catalogue of the Barracco Foundation Museum of Ancient Sculpture (Rome 1910): “the schools which gave birth to ancient sculpture... originated in Egypt and Mesopotamia …”. In the fertile land of the Near East confined by the two rivers the Tigris and the Euphrates, Mesopotamia, the civilizations of Sumeria, Assyria, Babylon and, in part, Persia, alternated for almost three millennia.
