The sphinx of Hatscepsut
Black granite

This has great importance among the numerous series of objects from the XVIIIth Dynasty. Damaged in its back hooves and with clear signs of hammer blows to the scroll of the chest, this is one of the rare examples known of the female sphinx. The inscription records the offering of Thutmosis III whose sister Hatscepsut was regent for him.
The sphinx was found in 1856 during the excavations at Iseo Campense in Roma, in the zone of the Field of Mars where in the Ist century AD a temple dedicated to Isis and Seraphis was built. It was acquired by the collector with the authorisation of the King.
