Fragmentary male head
Sculpture
Magna-Graecia original from the second half of the 5th century B.C.
Parian marble

Fragment of a head slightly blackened by fire; it comes from southern Italy (perhaps Sicily) and dates from the second half of the 5th century B.C. The cut of the face suggests that it was originally part of an architectural relief (metope?), while the presence of traces of a particularly type of cap ( alòpekis) makes it possible to identify the personage as Orpheus.
